Why choose i3? If you're contemplating whether to go with an i5 series desktop or if you can get away with a Core i3, we're here to help. Even the most basic dual-core processors are now designed to be fast enough for your usual day to day tasks, this is pretty much everything with the exception of Gaming/Video editing. If you're running just these basic tasks, you're likely better off taking the Core i3 processor and upgrading the hard drive to a SSD to operate quicker.
There has been many generations of the i3 processors; Nehalem, Westmere, Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Haswell, Broadwell, Sky lake and finally Kaby lake. Intel have very steadily increased the performance of the i-series processors generation by generation.
How many cores are necessary?
Generally you'll find that you'll find that programs run better on more cores, and this is where the usefulness of the Dual core i3's come from. Further to this, most i3's support "Hyper-Threading" this creates an additional two virtual cores which operate in tandem with the physical cores to boost your performance even more so! The i3-series processor is the perfect processor for your home computer or even in the office.
